TS Galaxy have completed the transfer of attacker Puso Dithejane to Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire for a reported R18-million fee. The deal, formalised in January 2026, sees the 1.83m-tall former Kaizer Chiefs academy prospect join the American club on a contract through the 2029/30 campaign as a U-22 Initiative player.
Chairman Tim Sukazi confirmed the move and revealed Dithejane turned down a higher financial offer from domestic champions Mamelodi Sundowns. "As TS Galaxy, we see the MLS becoming one of the top five leagues in the next five to eight years," Sukazi said. He stated the level of football in MLS is currently higher than in the Betway Premiership and visited several clubs, including Chicago Fire and FC Cincinnati, to explore a broader partnership. Sukazi's vision is for the club to establish a formal pipeline, using the American league as a proven stepping stone for South African talent aiming for the highest European levels.
Sundowns rejection
Sukazi explained on 13 January that the specific offer from Mamelodi Sundowns was rejected because it "didn't meet our valuation for the player." Chicago Fire, with sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter playing a key role, emerged as the club that secured the signature of Dithejane, who was regarded as one of South Africa's most exciting prospects before his departure. The transfer followed Dithejane's first senior Bafana Bafana call-up and debut goal in September 2026.
League context
The transfer comes as TS Galaxy handle a difficult domestic season. The Rockets sit 13th in the Premier Soccer League standings with just six points from eight games, having suffered three consecutive defeats. Their recent form is a concern, with the team having scored only seven goals while conceding twelve. Their most recent result was a 3-0 loss to Orlando Pirates on 13 October, leaving them 17 points adrift of leaders Sundowns. The club's immediate focus turns to halting this slide in their next fixture, a key match against fellow strugglers Cape Town Spurs.
Dithejane's move signals a clear shift in strategy for the club. Rather than a direct return to Naturena, which Kaizer Chiefs did not formally pursue, TS Galaxy are prioritising a pathway that uses MLS as a developmental bridge to Europe. The club will continue to play most home matches this season at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga.
